A VoxEU column of Dec 2023 summarizes our latest CEPR discussion paper findings on the interplay between sugar taxes and restrictions on advertising. Using UK data, we find that consumers who are sensitive to price also tend to be more sensitive to advertising. A soda tax leads the most advertising-sensitive consumers to switch away from taxed brands and reduces firms’ incentives to advertise the taxed products. An advertising restriction on its own will thus have a relatively small impact on total sugar consumption from drinks.
My short essay Software is Eating Competition, published in CPI’s EU column issue of July 2019, is now nominated for an Concurrences' Antitrust Student Paper Award. I wrote an earlier version of this essay for the student competition of Margrethe Vestager’s “Shaping Competition Policy in the Era of Digitization” conference, and met with the Commissioner to talk about it. More info about the conference here.
